Una, "Jonah," Mp3 Review

UnaIf I listen to a band for 6 hours straight, does that make me crazy? No, it just means I like their music. A lot. Una offers that kind of music, and once you hear them you will agree. My favorite Una song is "Jonah," from their One LP. It is a lyrically crafty and musically theatrical treat for the senses.

Una is a self-described down-tempo / trip-hop / electronica band from Los Angeles. The group is a three-piece consisting of Jennifer Cook (vocals), Richard Larsen (keys and guitar) and Eddie Barajas (turntables). Their song, "Jonah" (written by Cook and Larsen), is rich with aurally pleasing sound effects and rhythms, laced with a melodic acoustic guitar riff, and sweetened by Cook's sultry vocals.

I really dig the lyrics in this tune. The song begins with Cook singing, "Cut to the bar scene. Enter John, Jonah, Madeline. Sittin', drinkin', watchin'. Saying nothing. Nothing comes to mind." The chorus helps to explain the scenario. Cook again sings, "You see, John loves Madeline. Madeline loves Jonah, and Jonah, Jonah loves no one."

As one would expect from music of this genre, there are many "trippy" aural effects that tease the ears and the mind. Una does not disappoint. In fact, the audio production on "Jonah" is amazing. My favorite part is when the back-up vocals join in towards the middle of the song. They jump right through the speakers shouting, "Jonah!" This is just one of many sonic gifts that Una offers in this song.

Most impressively, if you take away all of the heavy production, electronic beats, reverberated effects and vocal choirs in "Jonah," what you are left with is still a great tune. The lyrics, melody, verses and chorus all hold up strongly on their own. Further, Cook is a wonderful singer and offers a great vocal performance.

Fans of down-tempo / trip-hop / electronica will certainly want to put Una at the top of their "new favorite band" list. Una's song, "Jonah," off of their One LP, is my favorite. Check out this and other Una tunes. Your ears will thank you.
