Tartan Terrors, “Lochleven,” Mp3 Review I originally decided to review the Tartan Terrors because of the high quality Celtic music they play. Their song, “Lochleven,” off of their Who's Your Paddy CD, is a bagpipe wailing, rhythmically driving, and aurally pleasing number. Once I researched the band further, I learned that producing great music is only a part of their talents. They also put on a phenomenally funny live show. Their mixture of original comedy, dance, and fantastic Celtic instrumentalism makes the Tartan Terrors a must hear and see musical force. “Lochleven” is an original piece written by Sean McKeown, who also performs the whistle and the Highland Bagpipes on the tune. “Lochleven” opens with this peaceful whistle backed by an acoustic guitar. A bagpipe melody soon follows. Then, just when you think you're in for a mellow ballad, the drums and the band kick in with force. The song’s sound is rich with a variety of additional instrumentalists including Ian Irmisch (bodhran), Todd Loughry (djembe, didgeridoo), Peter J. Corneil (bass drum), former Tartan Terror Steve Sinnicks (guitar), and Carl Petzelt (bass guitar). All of the playing is excellent, but I particularly like the effect of the didgeridoo. Though it’s originally an instrument of the indigenous Australians, it has impressively made its way into some modern-day Celtic music. I also hear some distorted electric guitar in “Lochleven.” The Tartan Terrors do keep true to the traditional Celtic music roots (with kilts and all), but they also allow themselves the creative freedom to do whatever they like. That's just one of the many reasons I like this band. The Tartan Terrors’ live show is a combination of laughs, dancing, music, and fun. With a great live act and great songs like “Lochleven,” off of their Who's Your Paddy CD, they’ve got everything going for them. This Canadian based band can be seen playing shows and festivals across their homeland as well as in the US. Catch them if you can. You’ll laugh, dance, and be thoroughly impressed by the talent of the Tartan Terrors. Artist Website: www.tartanterrors.com Reviewed By: ListenersGeneration.com
