Sybris, "Oh Man," Mp3 Review

"Oh Man," by Sybris is addictive. There's something about this song that get's me going. Maybe it's the feverish sense of rock urgency delivered by the musicians. Possibly, it's the unique, animated vocals of Angela Mullenhour that jump out of the speakers and drag you into the music. Whatever it is, I love it.
The energy of the band is vivacious throughout the song, and the lyrics are abstract and innovative. My favorite line in this tune is, "Hot metal is hot when you touch it / Got nothin' but bullets in the pockets / Oh, God I want some heat." I have no idea what the lyrics mean, but it just doesn't matter. Their effectiveness is achieved by the singer's phenomenal delivery over the equally complementary performance of the instrumentalists. Translatable or not, the off-beat, rhythmical lyrics work extremely well.
I can't forget to mention the slower breakdown mid-song. As the singer builds energy on her repeats of the hook, "Oh man, I want some shade," Sybris kicks into a half-tempo, fully distorted rock overdrive. Just when you're not quite sure what's going to happen next, the band jumps back into another verse at the original tempo, with even more energy than before. "Oh Man," is a powerful tune and I can't play it enough.
Sybris has been together since 2003, and have racked up a long list of touring dates in the past few years. I can only imagine how great "Oh Man" would be live. As far as availability, at this time it doesn't appear to be on CD. But from the looks of their Myspace site, we could be expecting this tune to show up on a release some time soon. I suggest they at least sell the single. I've got my credit card ready! Artist Website: www.myspace.com/sybris
