Kid Rock, “Amen," Mp3 Review

I first heard of Kid Rock years ago when my college buddy told me he had just heard the most kick-ass band at a fraternity party. It turns out it was Kid Rock and his band. Years more passed before Rock broke through the commercial music scene with a ferocity and talent that hadn’t been seen in a long time. Now well into a seasoned career, the talented Rock is still making great music.  His song, “Amen,” from the CD, Rock N Roll Jesus, is another prime example that he’s not just another commercial puppet, and he’s not a shallow pop star. The Kid’s got talent.

“Amen” shows us that Rock is a master at maintaining pop-appeal while still satisfying the critics’ need for substance. Don’t get me wrong; there have been a tune or two of Rock’s in his career that I thought were a bit over-commercialized. Friends, when you’re as big as Rock, things like that are bound to happen. But, the countless other songs he has produced, written, played on, sang on, and contributed fresh, intelligent, poetic, and heart-felt lyrics to, far overshadow any criticism I can muster.

Mix all of that talent with one hell of a stage performance, and you’ve got what few artists can accomplish: major commercial success with critical acclaim.

“Amen” delivers its tasteful, commercial appeal with a one word call-and-response to the title of the song. The rest of the tune is a great musical performance strengthened by great lyrics. In this drum-driving acoustic ballad, Rock sings, “It’s another night in hell another child won’t live to tell. Can you imagine what it’s like to starve to death? And as we sit free and well another soldier has to yell, “Tell my wife and children I love them,” in his last breath.”

I beg my songwriting students to write innovative lyrics like this.

Rock doesn’t need begging. He is a natural. Rock also doesn’t need the press or exposure, but he deserves it. Kid Rock is a gifted musician who continuously puts out great material and great performances. His song, “Amen,” is another quality tune and demonstrates why Kid Rock continues to garner respect from musicians, critics, and fans alike.
