Jonasty, "Honey Man," Mp3 Review There's nothing like a good dose of head-bobbing funk. Of course, any one musician can write a riff or play a C7 chord to create a funky sound, but it takes good chemistry amongst band members to deliver the goods. Bloomington, Indiana's Jonasty has the goods and the funk. Their song "Honey Man" is so funky, it makes me want to do the "white-man's lower lip bite" dance. I know that move doesn't look good on the dance floor, but with music this juicy, I just can't help it. I must say that the signature bass line in "Honey Man" is mmm-mmm good. I love the little bend that bassist, Mark Buschkill, throws in there. It's so simple and effective. Buschkill and drummer, Donn Middleton, lay down a rhythm that is tight and downright naughty. Adding some trippiness to the instrumental mix is a smooth, subtle wah-wah guitar delivered by vocalist and guitarist Jonas Flanary. Flanary's vocal range is higher than mine, which means he's certainly not a baritone. I love the soul-filled, gravelly tone he emits. Just beneath Flanary's vocals you can hear an exceptional saxophonist named Chris Kinnick. What I like about Kinnick and all of these musicians is that they can truly play their instruments with technical skill (I've listened to a few of their tunes). However in "Honey Man," they demonstrate their professionalism by giving only what is necessary. The result is subtle, smooth, and oh so funky.
Everyone wants to know which city will be the new Seattle. My vote is for Bloomington, Indiana. Many of you may not know that Bloomington consistently produces world-class musicians. Not only do they have a top-notch music school, but the live scene there is thriving. Jonasty is an active contributor to that scene, and with songs like their funk-laden "Honey Man," they'll have you jamming all night long.
