A Fine Frenzy, "Almost Lover," Mp3 Review
A friend of mine suggested I give the band, A Fine Frenzy, a listen. Turns out it's more of a solo project fronted by Alison Sudol. I must say after listening to her song, "Almost Lover," I can see why my friend made the recommendation, and why Sudol is garnering the attention that she is. In this well-written tune, "Almost Lover," Sudol's delicate vocals deliver a heart-wrenching story of a love that just wasn't meant to be. I don't often get lured into these kinds of songs, but the hook got me and reeled me in.
Opening with a slow, soft piano, Sudol comes in with a pretty, relatively soft-sung voice that delivers great lines such as, "You sang me Spanish lullabies / The sweetest sadness in your eyes / Clever trick." Sudol then takes advantage of her dynamic vocals and truly lets her emotions and singing talents shine. She wraps the verse up with the very touching and effective hook, "Should've known you'd bring me heartache / Almost lovers always do."
As the song progresses, Sudol's vocals become even stronger, demonstrating some great tone and control over some tough scales. All the while, the music builds ever so subtly. Most of the song is piano based with the addition of some background strings and very light guitar towards the end. This allows Sudol's phenomenal vocals to take center stage in this truly beautiful song.
"Almost Lover," is from A Fine Frenzy's CD, "One Cell in the Sea." It's a project by fronted by a very talented singer/songwriter named Alison Sudol, and you should absolutely check out this and other songs she has to offer.
