Marcus Eaton, Story of Now, CD Review Besides being a talented vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, Marcus Eaton can really deliver the hooks. Over a diverse collection of pop, rock, reggae, Latin, and acoustic tunes, Eaton’s stellar musicianship and lyrical hooks make the songs on his disc, Story of Now, quite enjoyable. Rooted in strong guitar riffs and unpredictable lyrics, Marcus Eaton delivers a great listen with this disc. With a complicated acoustic guitar style reminiscent of the finger-stretching Dave Matthews, Eaton easily and cleanly maneuvers complex guitar patterns. What I like most about Eaton is that he is not an imitator, but rather he builds upon his influences and takes his guitar playing to new and higher levels, as a great musician should. His smoking hot opening guitar riff in the track, “Victim of What’s Available,” is a great example. This is certainly my favorite song on the disc. The musicianship is phenomenal, the hook is great, and the Latin-influenced groove is quite addictive. Another fantastic track on this disc is “Burn it Down.” There’s something about the hook and the chord changes that immediately grab me. Eaton also shows his vocal strengths in this song and combines them with yet another stellar acoustic guitar performance. Eaton’s music is perfect for the masses and critics alike. It is produced to be commercially accessible. However, the musical talent and the creativity of the lyrics give the listener much more than simple, watered-down pop hits. I particularly like the lyrics in the title track, “Story of Now.” In this politically inspired song, backed by a reggae beat, Eaton sings, “In a time where we cannot be everything that the world wants us to be, I believe that good still exists between the control of the conquering fists.” There’s a great variety of love and political songs on this disc, delivered in many subtly different musical styles. Impressively, the diverse songs flow well together. Marcus Eaton has a great product on his hands, treating the listener to catchy hooks and stellar instrumentalism with his disc, Story of Now.
