Performing for Boar Hunters from Alabama

It was open mic night at in Nashville, Tennessee, but Nashville open mics are different. Five artists get on stage at a time, all sitting with their instruments, and take turns playing their originals while the house MC, who also has a mic, introduces the artists one by one. It's pretty strange.

This particular bar was connected to a hotel. Staying in the hotel that night and coming down for the free entertainment was a large group of boar hunters from Alabama. Was there a Boar Hunters' Convention? I just don't know. Can you hunt boar in Nashville? I'm not certain. What I do know is that I did not pick the right song to play for the audience I had. In fact, the song I played for my open mic performance was a very strange comedic song called, "The Pie Song," that opens, "I've never made straight A's, but I like to eat pie." My friends think it's a great tune. The boar hunters from Alabama - not so much. When the song ended, there was dead silence. Until finally, the MC simply said over the house PA, "Son, are you on drugs?" I was getting nervous. Then one of the boar hunters stood up, raised his beer and said, "I'll second that motion!" I was completely humiliated, the audience and the MC were not impressed, and I had to sit up there on stage for another 20 minutes while the other performers finished playing their songs. That's the last time I've ever played "The Pie Song" again.

Disclaimer: I have nothing against boar hunters, and I certainly have nothing against Alabama. What I learned, however, is that I need to choose more wisely the tunes I'm playing for the audience I have!
