Opening for National Acts Can Sometimes Suck

I have opened up for a few national acts. The Bodeans, Soul Asylum, and Eve 6 to be exact. Each gig sounded great on paper, and all of my friends thought I was the coolest thing on the planet. When they read this, they’ll know better.

Those gigs sucked! Here’s the skinny:

The Bodeans: We played at Turfway Racetrack in Kentucky at 9am on a Saturday morning. It was a million degrees out, the gig was 45 minutes from my house, and the crowd was still in bed by the time we got done. I don’t think we got paid. We did see the Bodeans in the backstage tent, but there was a lot of people in there, and I didn't get an autograph, a picture, or even a hug.

Eve 6: I opened up for Eve 6 four hours before they started! There was 3 people there. Pay, $125.

Soul Asylum: I did get to see Dave Pirner and the band warm up with, “Summer of Drugs.” But that was it. No autographs, no, “Hey I like your band would you like to tour with us?” Nope. Just a hot gig in the parking lot of a club. Two million degrees out. Got paid $50. Food was not free and very expensive. Where’s the love, Pirner? Runaway Train!

David Alan Coe: My band was asked to open up for David Alan Coe in a small town motorcycle bar. Our style was very hippie, jammy and unrehearsed. We knew we would get stabbed if we played there. Further, we were offered a whopping $0. We passed on that stellar opportunity, but we still tell everyone to this day we were asked to open for David Alan Coe.
