My Doctor Caused Me to Black Out for the Entire 3rd SetI was congested. That's it. My doctor friend gave me some prescription antihistamines. I knew we had a big gig that night, and that people would be buying us drinks by the dozens. So I asked him if alcohol would interact with the antihistamines. He said, "Absolutely not." When I blacked out for the entire 3rd set, that's when I realized that he was wrong. I had never blacked out in my professional drinking life. As I learned, when you black out, you don't remember a thing. That's where the live recording of the gig helps to remind you of how bad it really was. It wasn't until the next day that I heard the audio and learned just what had happened. I was listening to the recordings, then all of the sudden, realized I didn't remember playing certain songs. Even worse, as the lead guitarist, I played most of the solos in the wrong key. Further, as the lead singer, I slurred, forgot words, and yelled at my friends on the dance floor. Even worse, it was one of our biggest hometown gigs, and I had had been practicing for months to show off my sharpened guitar skills. It was a disaster. I do recall the end of the show. But as I mentioned, I didn't realize I had blacked out the entire set until the next day. To give you an idea of the amount of alcohol consumed that evening, we were drinking 32 ounce Sam Adams all night. Friends were buying us tequila shot after tequila shot. I recall 6 shots sitting in front of me alone at the end of the gig that I had not gotten to yet. Good thing. By the way, that's the last time I was ever intoxicated on stage again. I had practiced too hard to make such a fool of myself. I also seem to have accidentally "lost" the only recording of that evening. Oops.
