Another Story About Bizarre Random Crap...

Play Some Skynyrd or I'll Shoot You

The Blues Brothers, behind their chain link protected stage, would have been proud. Or more likely, scared. This was a dive bar to say the least in a rough Indiana neighborhood. However, my brother and his young hip friends had been frequenting the place for a while and were kind of subtly pushing out the local regulars.

One snowy, Saturday night, my brother invited my band to play at this bar. I was hesitant, but my bro promised to bring in 100 of his closest friends, so of course I agreed to play. The gig actually went well until one of the locals simply became fed up with our type of music. He wanted to hear, "Sweet Home Alabama," to which we politely lied and said, "We don't know that song."

I'm sure you other musicians have used similar lies.

By the way, I hate lying. But as a musician, I lie CONSTANTLY! Simply because I get requests for songs I know but just don't want to play. I say, "nope, sorry, I don't know it."

But let's get back to the violence. Because this guy didn't get his Skynyrd fix, he became violent. He complained to the manager, who noticed that he had a knife cupped in his hand. Now it's one thing to flash a knife and threaten someone. But if you're cupping a knife in your hand, you're not trying to threaten. Your're gonna stab someone.

Long story short, the owner told the guy the cops had been called. This perpetrator responded by saying, "I'm going out to my car and getting my gun." On his way out the door, he gave our band the stare of death and the middle finger, and proceeded to get the gun from his car. We stopped playing, locked everyone inside the bar, and waited until the cops came. By then, he was long gone.

We never did play Skynyrd, though. They're a great band, but we have a no-Skynyrd policy.
